Created between 1898 and 1900 Signed in ink with butterfly. Title from catalogue raisonné. On back with fragment of a signed letter: [Whis]tler's acknowledgements; [Dai]ly Mail [p]aralized with gratitude [a]t the delicacy and kind ... you chew the food ... readers-of course you; Pray receive my compliments, J. McNeill Whistler. In the 1905 Memorial Exhibition catalogue, Pennell stated this was a study for the full length self-portrait exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, 1900; in 1908 Pennell stated this was a study for Brown and Gold 1983.
