His interpretation of the Sakharoffs, serene and seemingly suspended in motion, in Valse Rouge, is one of the most superb poster designs ever created. The use of color, line and especially of white space is extraordinary in. its impact and lyricism. It is strong, tense and, above all, sure. He gets an assist from Chachoin, the leading Parisian theatrical lithographer of the period, who did so many fine posters, some seen in this volume, for Jean Cocteau, Paul Colin, Charles Gesmar and Kees Van Don-gen. Barbier designed both costumes and stage settings and beginning in 1913 illustrated a number of books including Danses de Nijinsky, Album dédié a Tarnar Karsavina, Poésies (of Baudelaire), Anna Pavlova, and a lovely book of theatrical costumes, Vingt-cing Costumes pour le Théâtre. One of his pen-and-ink-with-watercolors treatment of Isadora Duncan in 1917 is very vivid. In 1921 he also executed a poster for the Bal du Grand Prix at the Théâtre National de l'Opéra, but otherwise he designed few posters-and that's our loss.
