Born and raised in Russia, the Red Revolution interrupted Alajálov's studies at 16. He painted Soviet murals and posters to survive, before travelling to Persia - where he was a court painter for a khan - and then to Turkey, where he earned enough money for the $100 boat fair to America, arriving in New York in 1923. By 1926, Alajálov had his first cover published with The New Yorker and over the next 40 years, he designed numerous covers for The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Vogue and The Saturday Evening Post. At this time, The New Yorker and The Saturday Evening Post had exclusivity contracts and Alajálov remains one of only a handful of artists that worked for both publications simultaneously. He was also a serious painter and art teacher for many years and his work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Brooklyn Museum, amongst others.
