He studied at the Manchester School of Art, the Royal College of Art, and the Acade'mie Julian in Paris. He established himself in London as an oil and watercolor painter, as well as an illustrator and designer. He was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. During the Second World War, Staynes designed posters for the British campaign against the German U-boats. He died in London in April 1953.
