this system of wicking water helps prevent over and under watering. The trays are sturdy and dishwasher safe-great for tomatoes, perenials and annuals. My beets were sturdy at transplanting time and they matured before frost and were delicious. Those started as seed out side did not mature-it is cold here at night and they need a good start before planting outside
