Product details
Irish Drama in Poland: Staging and Reception, 1900–1979 represents the first attempt to broadly assess Irish drama’s impact on both Poland’s theatrical world and its cultural and literary heritage from the early to the late-middle part of the twentieth century. Including analysis of Yeats, Synge, O’Casey and Behan, as well as Wilde, Shaw and Beckett – and encompassing four distinct eras of Polish history – this engaging study explores the translation, production and reception of Irish plays in Poland, as well as the actual events and circumstances that led to certain plays being brought to the attention of Polish audiences. Keane also appraises the relevant historical and literary backdrops at the time of the productions, thus allowing readers to better gauge the considerable extent to which Irish theatre has informed Poland’s theatrical and literary heritage.
Irish Drama in Poland: Staging and Reception, 1900–1979 illustrates the importance of exploring the intercultural contexts and relations of seemingly distant countries within Europe, so that we may arrive at a more informed understanding of European culture and identity.
