A very small amount of electricity needs to flow in a circular path from the circuit board and its battery and back. By holding the ground wire in one hand, you are giving a return path for the electricity. By connecting the board to something that conducts electricity (like a banana) and tapping it with your finger from your other hand, you are completing the circuit and allowing electrons to flow through you!

fun but...
The novelty wore off the first day. Purchased for a 7 yr old and she liked making music with various objects but after a few hours that was it. She put it away and hasn't touched it since. For the $ I wouldn't spend it again.
