The author establishes a philosophy of art which is both intellectual and objective in character. It may initially appear that, because of this twofold approach, the theory is at odds with contemporary ideas. On closer examination, however, the reader will see that this approach is in fact much closer to contemporary thought rather than a departure from it. To admit that that a world other than that of our subjective state exists is to subscribe to an interpretation more in keeping with the real, and thus also with artistic reality.
The intellectual and objective philosophy of this book to interpret the beauty of art guards against all exclusivity and does not comprise that which gives it its value.
