DH-89

The DH-89 had one of the most advanced wings in its time. The high aspect ratio wing did not come into favor until the B-29 was designed. This makes a beautiful finished plane. Some relatively minor problems were encountered during the build. Specifically; the plans were slightly not "full sized". The construction of some areas was not detailed enough for me. The nature of the design is what would be expected for this type of kit, namely light, so it can be electric powered. The laser cut parts was a nice feature, clean and clear thru, however, I have some concerns about the durability. I will have to fly it accordingly. All in all it is a beautiful plane and it has been a pleasure to build. I would recommend it to my friends. pasjoe

Decent kit - good price.

Because this kit is made by Dumas, there are a lot of discrepancies between the printed instructions and the plans. You have to figure it out and adjust your build as you go - from the seat of your pants. I'm about halfway through the building process, and I wouldn't recommend this kit for anyone except a very experienced modeler. You have to take a lot of time with each section of the build, but I have to say that so far, I have a model that looks like it will fly. I should mention that I've been building models for 50 years. Also, there are several parts that you have to supply yourself (the cheapo wheels that come with it are useless, and a few other parts as well, like hinges and servo connections) Good luck if you're not an experienced model maker! But if you have the experience, this should turn out to be a nice looking bird.

About the wheels

The kit is nice, but it is really just "fun" scale. The part I liked the least were the wheels. The main wheels that came with the kit were very light, 1.4 grams apiece, but were made of really poor foam. I would have preferred they left out the tissue and supplied better wheels. I found Eflite EFLA223 wheels to be a reasonable replacement, although those wheels weigh 4.7 grams apiece, and have a larger axle opening. There's no tailwheel either, but any 1/2" wheel will be OK. I have a Dubro one.
