If the works of Charles de Lint and H.P. Lovecraft, through eldritch magicks and the blessing of the Order of the Golden Dawn, produced a child in 1970s Fort Worth, Texas, its name would be Shagduk. Intrigued? You should be. Debut novel of author J.B. Jackson, Shagduk (thankfully only the first in a trilogy) is a tantalizing addition to the weird fiction genre. The reader is effortlessly taken in by the music-scene drenched, nostalgia-laden, librarianship in-joke seasoned world of the first person narrator who we find in medias res of, well, de re dordica. Leaving as many questions unanswered as resolved, Jackson opens a door (probably better left undisturbed) to a narrative world of the everyday and the THIS-is-why-you-don't-mess-with-the-occult. Read it for the 1970s nostalgia. Read it for the mysterious breaking into the mundane. Read it for the Fort Worth music scene. Just read it. And keep an eye on this author. He's one to watch.
