The Hellmann's Real Mayonnaise History

Hellman's real mayonnaise got its start in 1913 when its namesake, Richard Hellmann opened up a delicatessen in New York City with his wife Margaret. By 1920, Hellman began selling his signature sauces, including his famous mayonnaise spread, already regarded as the best mayonnaise in the city.

Hellman sold two versions of his recipe, including one he regarded as the best tasting mayonnaise; his favorite version featured blue ribbons on the jars. The blue ribbon imagery remains to this day, as well as the famous recipe.
