In 1874, Degas took ballet, an important part of Parisian culture and depicted a rehearsal scene in what seems to be an “anti-impressionist” fashion. Between the dull choice of color, and the obvious fatigue expressed by both the dancers and the onlookers, this French artist draws attention to the repetitious nature of the rehearsed movements of the ballerinas: just like any other monotonous job. The dancers are stretching and yawning, while the onlookers appear almost bored, retaining little quiet charm, like most typically depicted ballet scenes did.
