I have used spindles and yarn bowls, which work well too, but this gadget controls the yarn in all directions thanks to the different openings to draw the yarn from. I find that yarn on spindles or in bowls can still jump up and out, requiring attention. This opens and closes easily when I want to realign things a bit. This has worked well with all the yarns I have used but when I was using a chained cotton/linen fiber that tangled easily this yarn holder was indispensable, as it would be for slippery yarn. It is a simple solution that works just as it is meant to.
