Not Terrible, but Strange Fit

I wanted to love these leggings. The material is a little shiny, but they look like jeans, so I didn't mind. I normally wear a medium but read the reviews and went with large. I'm 5'3"/132lbs but have a bit of a tummy, so I upsized to large (package I got said L/EXL) . The waist was a bit loose, but the thighs were very tight (and I don't have big thighs). Now I have no idea what size would actually fit me. Women in China must be built differently.
