L. E. Modesitt, Jr. is one of my favorite authors in this genre. The Spellsong Cycle series begins with this book, The Soprano Sorceress, when a college-level vocal professor is transported to another world where music is the foundation of magic. Previously struggling through faculty and administration politics, she finds that being a sorceress of great power in a low-tech society still entails the same machinations and manipulative people. The struggles of a strong woman in a male-dominant culture provide a common thread though the stories, written with a smooth, entertaining flow of action and believable character development. As a voracious reader, I find these books hard to put down once I get started. They are a delicious distraction from my everyday existence!
