Alternate use for shims?

I haven't used them yet, but they appear to be adequate for the purpose, very sturdy. They are black, will be easy to see in the ground. I have thistles, chicory, Queen Anne's lace in my yard. I do not use poison. I will cut the weeds and drive a shim into the ground next to each weed to mark where it is, then pour boiling water down along the root. That knocks them out for good.
