- The title of this and its companion volume is somewhat of a misnomer: although Hoopii was one of the very first -- and certainly the most famous -- of early Hawaiian guitarists, his music is that of a maverick, for he truly stands alone as the main conducting point between traditional island music and American jazz styles. His technique was nothing short of astonishing, and his influence soon swept stateside via phonograph records to become the standard musical lingo of many hillbilly dobro and Western swing steel players. This 16-track compilation focuses on his earliest recordings, ranging from 1926's "Twelfth Street Rag" to 1930's "Tin Roof Blues." The selections culled for this reissue are evenly divided between early jazz standards ("St. Louis Blues," "Farewell Blues," "I Ain't Got Nobody," "Singing the Blues") and Hawaiian traditionals like "Hilo," "Sweet Lei Lehua," and "Kilohana." Hoopii's use of unusual tunings (all of his own derivation, including one that went on to become a standard Nashville steel guitar tuning) and his uncanny ear for copping horn licks on his instrument made him the top player and innovator on his instrument of his day. Here are 16 wonderful examples of how that reputation was made. ~ Cub Koda, Rovi
