I think this really is what Mastercraft says; "a good deal on a great tire." I rolled the dice on getting a set of Stratus AS without finding any reviews because these were a new tire. I did call Mastercraft and with ease, got connected to a tire tech who could tell whether or not I would be pleased with this tire based off of a few questions. I drive very safe but I like a handling tire because of unforeseen emergency circumstances as well as some occasions of spirited driving. I put these on my rear wheel drive 1991 Mercury Cougar XR7 5.0L which has Tokico shocks and springs and an Addco rear sway bar. I have 16 inch rims because I like to maintain the 90's era styling vs putting on a set of big mclargehuge diameter wheels. Thus, I think the Stratus AS is a great tire for my needs. I wanted an American made tire with an affordable price for a family man and this one is made in U.S.A. If you look where your prospective tires are made, you'll be amazed. I did not want to pay big money for a tire on a car that is lowered and has somewhat aggressive alignment. This is not as a high mileage tire as some of the more expensive options, you can compare tread depth. For me, that's ideal because my commutes are not long enough to ever use it. This is a touring tire and it is great as just that. This is not a true real deal summer only tire, but I think it offers enough handling in the fun department to make me content and I would be comparing that to my old set of Falken ZE 912's. Those handled well in the dry, but that's about it. About the design of the tire, I was able to compare the tread design and guesstimate the void ratio based on a few other designs out there. Michelin has a touring tire, the Premier AS, that is very close in tread pattern with great reviews. Hercules offers a similar design in the 455 Road Tour and a Sport model with minor tuning and tweaking of the sipes. Now, rubber compounds and other variables remain, but this comparison proved to help me feel confident enough to try them out. This tire is a lighter construction than i've had before, but remember that air holds up the car. This should yield better MPG. The voids of this tire are greater than I had on my Falken 912's and the circumferential grooves are wider. These do quite well in rain and that's the reasoning behind this, though I always drive with extreme caution. Surprisingly, this higher void ratio has not dialed down the fun meter with the dry handling. I mentioned that my Cougar is made to handle and uses the 225/60R16 size. This is a big tire, not some 185/75r14, thus i'm still getting a wide contact patch. My Cougar has loud exhaust, but, I cannot complain of any road noise that i've heard. I've driven on many different paved roads around here and I just don't hear any unpleasant noise at city or interstate speeds that i've noticed. We made the switch to Cooper for the family car and Mastercraft on the late model performance cars and support a company that made our tires in the U.S.A. No complaints thus far.
