Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence was a British suffragette and activist who fought for women's right to vote in the early twentieth century, finally winning this right in 1928, some nine years after their female counterparts in the United States. Pethick-Lawrence was an inspiration for women in both countries and remains an iconic figure of the British suffragette movement inspired by Americans like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Her work grew more radical during this period when she met Alice Paul in Washington, DC, where this photograph was taken.
