Cheap protection!

This is a no-brainer! The built-in battery lasts for 10 years, then you dispose of the unit and get another one. Consumer Reports and Kidde both recommend that you replace your smoke detectors every 10 years anyway as the sensors degrade over time. The twist here is that you don't have to feed it a new 9V alkaline battery every year, saving you $30-40 over a ten year period. It mounts easily on drywall with 1 screw - drill a single 3/16" hole and install the tiny mounting plate with a Phillips screwdriver. Brilliant!

Easy to install

The fact that this lasts for 10 years sold me. I love not having to worry about changing the battery every 6 months. This covers a huge living area. It is very important to have one in your home and having one you don't have to worry about is great.

Safety without any worry!

Kidde's safety record preceded receipt of Kidde Worry-Free 10 YEAR BATTERY Living Area Smoke Alarm. Used to replace older, ceiling smoke detector located in my lower level. New unit has Photoelectric Sensor - a "Hush Button" to temporarily silence alarm if desired, and Test Button & LED verify operation light. Reused metal mount plate (standard electric outlet plate) from previous detector - used same mount screw to attach Kidde mounting plate. Only offer info as do-it-yourselfer. All downhill from here. Safety 1st - if in doubt find another suitable living space to mount either as ceiling/wall new unit. All install/operating info included both on paper & within back side of top unit. Kidde Smoke alarm comes in 2 parts, mounting plate - top section which holds brains of unit. Package came with more than adequate info, instructions, safety, location suggestions, etc., mounting options (wall/ceiling), 2 drywall anchors with screws if your choice of mounting surface. Once mounting plate securely attached, only thing left to do is turn top/exposed part (brains) of alarm clockwise to mounted base, til hear a mild "click", and chirp - chirp is sound to let you know alarm is activated. DONE!! It has a small space on the outside of top unit to mark install date - follow up date. Took permanent marker - put expire date (few months before) on cover face so easily seen just looking up. Unit has large "test" button in middle of top cover - it is strongly recommended to test weekly to ensure in operation. Push "test" button will give you 2 sets of 3 short beeps/red light flash - all OK. This unit is well thought out, designed, easily operated/tested, installation effortless - highly recommend - 10 yr battery life is added security - I routinely mark expire/install times on things in my home w/markers - saves digging up papers for routine questions that may come up. This purchase a no brainer for ease, security and safety.
