When young Evelyn Templeton falls in love with handsome Frederick Davenport, she cannot imagine that her dream of marrying him would ever come true. For she is a nouveau riche's daughter and he is an heir to the proud Viscount of Alnwick. However Viscount of Alnwick is broke and the only way of repairing his family's fortune is Templeton's money. And thus, shortly after Evelyn's father's untimely death, she finds herself married to the man of her dreams. The marriage, though, turns out to be as far from her dreams as possible and when her husband joins the army to take part in the Peninsular War, Evelyn has to act quickly to save her family's home.After the war, Frederick comes back home a changed man. He clearly realises all the failings of his younger self and needs badly to atone for them. But as he sets out to earn Evelyn's forgiveness he also learns about his wife's deception. And the possibility of happily-ever-after quickly vanishes as there are years of mistrust and broken promises separating them.
