The preservation and restoration of native oak (Quercus spp.) woodlands has recently become an important priority for land managers and conservationists in the western United States. This effort has been driven by a growing recognition of the significant loss of oak habitat and the subsequent "increased value placed on oak woodlands within the past 20 years, for esthetics, wildlife habitat, watershed functioning, outdoor recreation" and other qualities .
