Beautiful, Top-Notch Knife

Buck has done a great job with this model 124. The length from the cross guard to the tip of the blade is 6 5/8". The overall length is 11 5/8". It weighs 13.25 Oz. The surprise to me is the bulk of the handle.. It is 1" wide and just a bit over 1"high. The micarta scales are beautifully polished to form virtually seamless unions with the highly polished guard, tang, rivets and pommel. My first impression was. "This is to beautiful to use in the field." The blade is 1 5/16" wide from the spine to the edge. It is 5/32" thick from the guard to 1" from the tip. It is actually a straight back knife although it appears to be a clip point. There is a short bevel on both sides of the spine from the tip to about 1 1/2". The tip is probably stronger than that of a true clip point. For my hand, the handle could be about 1/4" narrower and about 1/2" shorter, but it's not bad. It is also kind of slippery for dry hands. For moist hands or with a leather glove it would be fine. The sheath is very robust and well made. The leather is nearly 1/8" thick. The seams are well stitched and the sheath opening is riveted on both sides. The closure strap is well thought out. The forward edge of the strap is long enough to go around the handle to snap on the under side of the handle. This makes the back of the strap short enough to keep clear of the blade as it is moved in or out of the sheath. I would have liked a hole or a short strap at the bottom of the sheath for a tie down cord, however the belt loop is riveted to the sheath at both the bottom and the top which will keep the sheath relatively stable while drawing the knife. All in all, this is a well made, heavy duty knife which is up to any task consistent with it's size and weight. The only question I have is wether to use it or only admire it.

If I could have only one knife.

This would be the one.
