  • As hard as it is to believe now, Frank Sinatra's career was at its lowest ebb during the early '50s. His career and personal life were in shambles and the stress combined with years of oversinging took a toll on his voice. Sinatra was lucky to get his own television show but during this time TV was actually the last refuge of those whose careers were on their way down, not up. But while entertainers such as Lucille Ball and Milton Berle were able to have their greatest popular and artistic successes with the new medium, it took Capitol Records and the movie From Here to Eternity to put Sinatra back on top. While he normally came across as relaxed and affable on radio, Sinatra often seemed edgy and intense on television -- he was the anti-Perry Como and it was mellow performers like Como who prospered in TV. This musical overview of Sinatra's 1950 and 1951 TV career shows an artist who is struggling to recover his confidence and voice and it houses some real gems, making this a must for fans and collectors. Some of the best tracks include hard-swinging takes on "It Had to Be You" and "There'll Be Some Changes Made" and a version of "These Foolish Things" that's backed only by Skitch Henderson's piano. The late '40s and early '50s were a hard time for Sinatra, but CDs such as this show that the music he made during this period was of a much higher caliber than the standard remembrances would have you believe. ~ Nick Dedina, Rovi
