Much-admired student of Tchaikovsky and teacher of such Russian greats as Glière, Rachmaninoff, and Scriabin, the compositions of Sergey Taneyev have largely been lost in the shuffle until recent years. Though his composition had many admirable attributes, his greatest strength was doubtless his knowledge of counterpoint. His three string trios are a shining example of his skill in this area. His first foray into the genre came in 1879 with the D major Trio, after which he did not return to the string trio until 1910 with the very mature and fulfilling E flat major Trio. His final Trio in B minor, which remained unfinished at the time of his death, was begun in 1913 and completed by Taneyev's publisher. The two trios in major keys are highly spirited works, clearly influenced by high Classicism, while the B minor trio is intensely brooding.
