Starting over at twenty is easy. At thirty it's a test of your mettle. I've thought about it a lot, the concept of reinvention. The term has been used both by me and by others to describe the way I've moved through my career and in some ways my life. My restlessness is a side effect of my upbringing, one of the greatest gifts my parents could have given me. And while I would argue that I'm just as afraid of change as anyone, I'm more afraid of standing still to find the world has moved on without me. As a kid, there was always hope waiting in the next city at the end of another long drive; difficult as it was sometimes to pack up and go, I found the unknown more intriguing than the known. I never make plans to start over, there are no calculations or incentives weighed. At worst, I've made a mess I'm trying to flee. At best, there's some new frontier or inspiration I can't help but chase down. But the truth is, most times, when I begin again, it's some combination of the two. I fear the plateau, I prefer the climb, but I'd rather descend, regroup, and find another mountain than keep watching the world from the same lookout, no matter how breathtaking the view.-From Three Pianos Book jacket.
