Writing in Down Beat in 1952 Ralph Gleason opined quot;The Gerry Mulligan Quartet is certainly the freshest, most interesting sound to come out of jazz in some time.quot; This was of course the now legendary group with Chet Baker, Bob Whitlock and Chico Hamilton which became a kingpin of the quot;new West Coast jazzquot; movement. Since those early days Mulligan's career took him far and wide. 1959 found Gerry touring Europe with probably the finest of the post-Baker Quartets and it is difficult to imagine a player more suited to act as a foil to Mulligan than the superb trumpeter Art Farmer - heard here along with Bill Crow and Dave Bailey providing just the perfect blend needed.
