0016861839222. Pre-Owned: Good condition. CD. Fresh Roadrunner signee Red Tape comes out of the box with an engaging, if not particularly original sound on its full-length debut Radioactivist. The Sacramento-based band draws heavily from that mid to late 1980s musical proving ground, where hardcore, post-hardcore, and thrash bands fought with Xeroxed flyers and crappy amplifiers for the souls of the kids. Years later, Red Tape has cherrypicked those styles' most effective elements, refined the resulting components with a professional production rig (run here by Orgy's Amir Derakh), and presented the finished product as a set of knife sharp anthems. The title track, "Reactor", and "Stalingrad" are most most representative of Red Tape's sound; they're essentially crossing the tensile guitar lines and anthemic rush of early Fugazi with the unbridled thrash rhythms of Anthrax, and gluing that sound together with catchphrase polemics and pop culture scattershot (sample lyrics: "We're a generation of toxic wasted/Sex and drugs the antidote"; "I got hands of gods/I got Chinese bodyguards"). Red Tape's sculpted, energizing cocktail of hardcore, thrash, and punk revivalism should make extreme sports athletes very happy. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi
