Not up to my expectations

I was expecting to turn the animals in the kit into small "huggable" toys for my grandson. The fabric is stiff. I may try to wash a couple of pieces to see if they soften up. The fabric is cut into pattern pieces, then backed with an adhesive. Can't tell if that's washable, but it makes it impossible to applique the accent pieces onto the body of the animals. There's no seam allowance, so the finished animals will be flat, not even gently stuffed.
