Canton Aquatics Live Aquarium Plant Care, Acclimation & Quarantine Guide Live aquarium plants from Canton Aquatics are carefully grown and packaged to help you create a healthy, natural freshwater aquarium. Live aquatic plants enhance aquascaping, improve water quality, provide shelter for fish and shrimp, and support balanced aquarium ecosystems. Because live plants are natural organisms, proper acclimation and care are essential to ensure successful establishment and long-term growth in your aquarium. Upon arrival, unpack your plants promptly and remove all packaging materials. Inspect each plant for overall health. Minor leaf damage, temporary discoloration, or slight wilting may occur during shipping and is normal. Trim any damaged leaves or roots using clean scissors. Gently rinse plants in dechlorinated or conditioned water to remove debris. For potted plants, remove most of the growing media unless otherwise recommended. For rhizome plants such as Java Fern or Anubias, avoid burying the rhizome in substrate. Floating plants can be placed directly on the water surface. To minimize transplant shock, gradually acclimate plants to your aquarium. Place plants in aquarium water for 15 to 30 minutes to equalize temperature, then slowly introduce aquarium water to the container over several minutes. Plant rooted species into substrate and attach rhizome plants to rock or driftwood using aquarium-safe materials. Most freshwater aquarium plants thrive with stable water parameters, appropriate lighting, balanced nutrients, and consistent aquarium maintenance. For sensitive aquariums or shrimp tanks, optional plant quarantine is recommended. Place new plants in a separate container or quarantine tank with conditioned water for 3 to 7 days. During this period, monitor for pests such as snails or algae and provide gentle light and water circulation. Optional plant dips may be used following aquarium-safe methods. Ongoing care includes providing appropriate lighting based on plant type, using aquarium-safe fertilizers as needed, maintaining regular water changes, and trimming plants to encourage healthy growth. It is normal for plants to shed older leaves as they adapt to a new environment. Growth rate, size, and appearance depend on aquarium conditions, lighting, and nutrient availability.
