The Japanese Wife is a memoir chronicling a woman's desire to experience first-hand, life in a culture different from her own; where the language was not her mother tongue. Trish chose Germany, which was where she was to meet her future husband - a Japanese ski instructor. Thus Japanese became the culture and the language Trish was to immerse herself in. This is the story of Trish's attempt to overcome cultural divides and inter-cultural miscommunication, to build a marriage with a man from a completely different world. Trish had wanted to believe that if two human beings loved one another, deep human feelings and instincts would overcome cultural chasms. For Trish and Sakae, this 48-year experience was a mountainous and geologically unstable journey, not unlike the land which the Japanese people inhabit.
