Key item features
On the double-disc compilation, Absolute Worship, Fervent Records presents 25 young up-and-coming contemporary Christian artists. Featuring big melodic choruses, mid-tempo rhythms, electric-acoustic guitars and devotional lyrics -- these songs praise in an emotional pop-rock format that makes sense for young adults and older adults alike. . . many were hits on Christian adult contemporary radio over the past two years.
Putting a fine foot forward, Absolute Worship begins with an acoustic-electric pop-rock waltz by Mobile, Alabama-based quintet Big Daddy Weave, who sing on "Audience of One." ". . . I have one desire/ To bring glory to Your name/ To my audience of one/ You are Father and you are Son/ As your spirit flows free, let it find within me/ A heart that beats to praise you." The song was found originally on their chart-topping 2002 debut full-length One And Only, which won them a nomination for New Artist of the Year at the 2003 Dove Awards.
Next is another heavy hitter -- the popular, deep-voiced (think Nickelback's Chad Kroeger) Jeremy Camp with a track off his newly released "prequel" album, Carried Me: The Worship Project. After that, New Haven, Connecticut quartet Ten Shekel Shirt sings about the beauty of the coastline as an affirmation of God's love on "Ocean," a Christian-environmental anthem and number one hit that shimmers like Toad the Wet Sprocket's "Walk on the Ocean." Later on the first disc, South African quartet Tree63 makes an impression with "Treasure," suffused with some buoyant '80s new wave influence and a great. . . big. . . hook. Things remain up-tempo with Joel Hanson and Sara Groves' toe-tappin' title cut from 2002's Traveling Light: Songs From The 23rd Psalms. The cut shows off great lead vocals by Joel and pretty background vox by Ms. Groves.
The second disc turns the brunt of its attention to new female CCM voices like Watermark's Christy Nockles who offers dazzling, emotional vocals on "Holy." She's joined on disc two by Kara, whose classical strings-meet-poptronica song, "Hungry" offers a gorgeous hook and cutting-edge tone colors. Ginny Owens also presents herself well with a minor-keyed "If You Want Me To," which is reminiscent of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me" and equally heartbreaking. And emerging Nashville pop-folk artist Jill Phillips has her moment too. On "Hanging On," programmed percussion gives way to organic drums popping a tight rhythm that drives the song forward.
Highlights from disc two also include a couple of male artists. Shaun Groves delivers a powerful vocal and tight lyrics on the tender, piano and strings based "Welcome Home," and The Katinas (the quintet of brothers born in American Samoa) hit the mark with the all-acoustic ballad (and major CCM hit) "Thank You," from their 2001 live album, Lifestyle: A Worship Experience.
Absolute Worship is nearly two hours of the best of what the contemporary praise community has to offer, and an excellent primer to that community's brightest emerging talent.
