Unsure about this product

Purchased this as the recommended medium for spirogyra (for son's science project). Followed the directions to reconstitute and added the algae. 2 weeks later and it's not doing well (and we need it to last another 2). Not sure if it's this product or the algae or something else.

Subculture failure.

I used soil-water medium as instructed but evidently failed at survival and reproduction of Micrasterias thomasiana.
