Emperor [DVD]

This is a very enlightening film based on the story of a real officer during the occupation of Japan after World War II ended. General Douglas MacArthur faces a touchy situation dealing with whether or not to charge the Emperor Hirohito with war crimes, which was then a hanging offense. Surprisingly, with the help of one of his officer's investigation and his meeting with Hirohito (no one was supposed to talk with or even look at the deified emperor in those days) he comes to a decision which saves everyone further grief. Told from the viewpoint of the younger officer who investigates, a sympathetic picture of the Japanese people emerges. Great movie!
