The Good Shepherd, (Paperback)

Folks, I have only had time to scan the novel! The film had me captivated at the opening scene with the PBY signaling to the Greyhound that he's out of range. It's a beautiful moment that speaks to "boundaries;" we learn them, we live them. The novel itself is promising at a cursory glance. It's a host of characters, fictional, and Forester includes an interesting preface to this effect, imagining that somewhere in his cast, he may have stumbled upon an actual name, completely unintentionally. (Forester's WW2 experiences have apparently come into question...Worth researching more fully, but I do not think it detracts from this well-crafted story.) Narrative seems exciting and in keeping with the, albeit effects driven, film derivative. Can't wait to get to this novel with the time to spare. Chapters are aptly arranged by the ship's bell system or "watches" mirrored in the film. Other destroyer escort names have changed! but what is in a name? Krause's orders barked strike me as consistent with Hanks's worthy performance. Again, I have loved the film in many viewings and expect to enjoy this novel in its entirety.
