The McDonnell F-4S Phantom II was such a spectacular aircraft that both the Navy's Blue Angels and the Air Force's Thunderbirds flew it from 1969 to 1973. The F4 Phantom II first flew in 1958 and entered service in 1961. The plane set eight records during its career, including altitude (98,557 feet), speed (1,390 mph), and time to climb (9,000 feet in 34.5 seconds). The F-4S was an upgrade that fixed a smoking engine problem.
