highly recommended
I bought my Oregon 600 about a year ago and am very happy with it. I loaded maps onto the unit and have found it very valuable while hiking on the East Coast. Regarding some of the other reviews: If you do a little research, you'll know exactly what comes with the unit. You can also download a manual from the Garmin web site that covers most every feature for the unit. If you're new to GPS technology, I suggest you to to your public library and get a book on how gps's work. if you do, you'll probably be impressed with the feature set of the 600 and the fact that it has a color touch screen

Unpleasant Surprise
I was really looking forward to receiving and trying out my new Garmin Oregon 600 Christmas present. Upon opening the box I was VERY surprised it DID NOT include a battery or 110 volt charger (wall wart) to go along with the supplied USB to mini-USB cable. So much for trying out my new gift on Christmas eve. I was also surprised to find a VERY short instruction manual lacking lots of details. There is lots of work and extra expense in getting the unit up and running which wasn't expected. I guess if I carried a laptop around to keep the AA batteries charged things would be fine. Even cell phones of much less expense come with batteries and chargers these days!
