In 1439 Eugenius IV transferred to Florence from Ferrara the Council which he had called to discuss the question of uniting the two great branches of the Catholic Church, the Greek and the Roman' This was a question that had come up at intervals ever since the separation,1 a question that still agitates the Catholic world. On the part of Eugenius, the summoning of the Council was an effort to reinstate papal authority over the Eastern Church and to restore the clerical juris diction of Rome over Constantinople.
