An excellent router

This Buffalo router lives up to its expectations. I purchased it so I could add a Virtual Private Network to the router and increase my network security for all of my devices. The router arrived two full days ahead of the scheduled arrival. Now, there are two firmware packages that are supplied with this router. One is the "non-professional" firmware and the other is the "professional" firmware. The firmware that you choose is crucial if you intend to install a Virtual Private Network on your router. So, you must choose the "professional" firmware and then upgrade it to the latest version of DD-WRT firmware. For non-technical people this can be a daunting task at first blush. (Note: some VPN providers can be used with Buffalo's stock "professional" firmware but my provider required the DD-WRT upgrade in order to work properly.) So, rather than go into this in boring detail, I'll summarize the main points: if you want a VPN service to use with your router, you should: 1 check with your potential provider to see what their requirements are before you buy this or any other router 2 check the DD-WRT website to see if your router is supported by new firmware (this router is fully supported) If you are not into technical stuff, you may be bewildered by the "professional" firmware. The only way a VPN client can be implemented on your router is by utilizing the "professional" firmware and most likely you will have to upgrade the firmware with DD-WRT. (this router works perfectly as a VPN client, using DD-WRT v3.0 Build 28598 std 12/24/2015, which is available directly from the DD-WRT website.) Now, this router works perfectly for me and I would recommend it to anyone, with the above caveats. One more note: some websites are now banning VPN URL's. This may or may not grow as a problem. I've used a VPN for years and have never had a problem until recently. OK...another note: if you have a phone device, like NetTalk, it will probably stop working until you can get the ports and addresses straightened out with your phone service provider. Do not expect any help from the phone provider, though. That's about it.
