I was hoping I might be able to use this with a standard pole handle with a screw top. However, this is designed to be used only with an unger pole due to the attachment piece. It does mention using an unger pole in the description, but I did the 'assume' thing without a picture to clarify. My attempt at rigging up something failed too. Afterwards, I found that there is an adapter on the site to be used with a standard pole, but I had to search for it - no link from the bulb changer description. I did not find where you could buy the complete pole except in a kit that cost $189. the shipping was high on this because it shipped from Tool King instead of Wal-mart, so I wasn't interested in ordering any more products from Tool King. Instead, I went to my local wal-mart and bought a complete bulb changer kit including the pole for $17. Wish I had done that in the first place and saved the wasted expense of the changer and the shipping! If you don't have an Unger pole already, or want to buy the adapter, then don't order this.
