Yes, it is a thin tablecloth, but these are surprisingly more durable than you'd think. I hate to have to wash the cotton ones all the time and I am allergic to polyester, so these are perfect with placemats for added durability. I just replace them when they show wear. The worst I've gotten is stretched vinyl and they haven't actually torn through.
