I visited the Optical Shop at the Waterville, Maine Walmart to purchase a pair of glasses, with a "progressive" lens prescription from my ophthalmologist. Because I serve as an umpire in the local Little Leagues, I was interested on purchasing a pair of glasses in "sport" frames, specifically designed to be worn under a "hockey-style" helmet. After trying on several pairs of frames and testing that the helmet could be donned/removed without disturbing the glasses, I settled on a pair of frames. When the glasses were ready, I returned to Walmart, with my helmet, to "try on" the new glasses. While the frames worked well (I could don and remove my helmet without upsetting the glasses), my vision with the glasses was significantly distorted, especially, at distance. The staff thought that perhaps the difficulty was related to the fact that the "sport" frames wrapped around my face more than my regular glasses. With that in mind, trying a different set of frames, one that "wrapped around" only slightly, was suggested. While the Waterville store did not have the suggested frames, the store in Augusta had the suggested frames, and I agreed to mounting the lenses in the suggested frames. In due time, Walmart contacted me to tell me that my glasses had arrived. When I tried them on, the problem of distortion had not been resolved. At that point, the Optical Shop asked if I wanted to pursue this further or accept a refund of the purchase price. I opted for the refund, in part because the baseball season was nearly over. I want to be clear that the staff at the Waterville Walmart Optical shop were solicitous and very willing to work with me to meet my rather specific needs. Further, it seems likely that the issue was, at least in part, the fact that I required "progressive" lens, and that the likely solution was a set of frames that did not "wrap around" my face, risking damage to my glasses should the removal of my helmet dislodge the glasses.
