I was happy with this filter until it started leaking at the bottom

I have been using this filter for years in far flung places and was super happy with its performance. Then it started leaking water from the side through the crack where the filter element screws into the unit. So instead of getting filtered water through the bottom hole, water squirts out through the sides. No matter who tightly I screw in the filter element, it keeps squirting out the side. Will the purchase of a new filter cartridge solve this problem?
