The gel packs really do retain the cold in use and refreeze very quickly. We originally bought these for my son to use after his knee surgery. As long as we followed the care instructions properly, we found it also worked extremely well in his cold water therapy pump in keeping the tank water cold.

I got the two-pack and I highly recommend it. They don't stay cold as long as some other ice packs we've had over the years, but the quality of these new ones is so much better that it's not really an issue. The beauty of having two of them is you can always have one at the ready in the freezer when it stops being cold enough. Other reviews said they are heavy and recommended this smaller size - great advice! These are just big enough to lay on your pillow, under the small of your back, upper back, etc. I keep both of them on a fast-food type tray in the freezer - works great! These feel like physical therapy quality to me (and we've seen many).
