After research I found this sort of weed killer would work. I sprayed it on the area and within a few days it all started dying off. I have started pulling out the thick rooted weeds and will sow more grass in 2 weeks as directed.

I sprayed this product throughout the entire yard. The next day I noticed some wilting in the weeds. On the 3rd day the weeds were brown and dried up. This product is much better than the stuff I buy off the store shelf.
