Works well for small projects but there is a learning curve!

I bought this to fix an antique school teacher's bell and old hand crank coffee grinder. I watched the video from Bernzomatic and read the instructions. First off getting the MAP gas to a touching flame was easy but introducing the oxygen takes practice, I snuffed out the torch a few times. I found that it took almost exactly 2 full turns of the oxygen valve to get to the correct range for fine tuning the flame. I started to recognize the point where the flame is about to turn blue and start hissing and then I would slow down and fine tune the MAP gas as necessary. I only ever used the "starting flame" I found it very hard to get to the full brazing flame but it didn't matter, just be patient and wait for the work piece to heat up and even the "starting flame" will work fine for an amateur. The brass bell needed a new eye hole added to the clapper, so I found some heavy copper wire and used the thin wire (WB-5 I think) booze coated flux wire to attach the copper to the brass, I heated it up till I got it glowing red and then touched the thin rod to it and then reheated everything. I would describe it as closer to a solder than a weld but the connection was permanent and I gave it a good long contact area so I looks solid. The old cast iron coffee grinder handle was harder to heat up as it absorbed a lot more energy. I used the blue rod (NS-3) Nickel silver to make that connection, I need it to look original from the front so I just welded the back only (this is a decorative piece so that was strong enough). Again I got it glowing red and used enough material to fill in a small v shaped void I filed in-between the tow broken parts of the cast iron handle. I think the very high heat in the material made for a strong weld but it took a while to get it up to that temperature given how small this kit is. I still have plenty of oxygen so I prefer using a smaller flame to give me more time to work and going slower helped. For someone with no experience I felt happy.

Great tool if you know it's limitations.

I've owned this set for many many years and just had the opportunity to use it again this past week. I had two nuts on an exhaust manifold that I had spent at least an hour working on removing. Penetrating oil, the works. Nothing would budge them. Then I remembered I had this torch tucked away in the garage - ran out and bought two oxygen cylinders because I know they don't last long - and went to town. I had the nuts off of that manifold in about 5 minutes. Worth it's weight in gold for the savings in aggravation of removing stuck bolts. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because the plastic on my Oxy regulator is starting to crumble - but after 20 years I suppose it's about time.
