Seeking to understand the texts that make up social reality is essential for the formation of critical citizens. Hence the importance of the work we present in this book. Here we analyse the speeches from the election campaigns of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for President of the Republic, with the aim of understanding how he developed his arguments to convince voters. Lula ran in five elections for President of Brazil, and this factor constitutes an interesting piece of data for our research, as it allowed us to observe the evolution of this speaker's argumentative discourse in the electoral process. Our observations are supported by the theories of Rhetoric and Argumentation and Critical Discourse Analysis (with an emphasis on Political Discourse Analysis). We can say that Lula is a political figure who has marked the history of Brazil, thereby achieving worldwide recognition. For this reason, we believe that analysing his discourse, especially at a key moment in the democratic system such as an election, is relevant. It is to this critical analysis of the text that we invite the reader.
