The first thing I noticed when I unrolled it is the strong plastic smell. Like a new shower curtain mixed with a pool float. I left it outside in the sun for two full days and the smell faded to almost nothing. By day three, I could only smell it if I put my nose right on the rug. The size is accurate. 8' x 10' covered the area under my outdoor couch, two chairs, and a coffee table with room to spare. The rug laid flat immediately. This rug is made of woven plastic straw. It is not soft. Walking on it with bare feet feels like walking on a stiff doormat or a bristly welcome mat. It's fine with shoes or sandals, but if you like going barefoot on your deck, this rug will annoy you. My kids refused to walk on it without shoes. The waterproof claim is true. I left it out during a heavy thunderstorm and water beaded up on the surface. The next morning I tilted one corner and the water ran off. No puddles soaked through to the deck underneath. The rug dried within an hour of the sun coming out. The black and gray pattern does a great job hiding dirt. I dropped coffee, tracked in mud, and had a bird leave a present on it.
