The follow-up to 1996's excellent SLOWDIVER, SUTRA SPIN finds Tom Vedvik venturing even deeper into subtle electronica, lush ambient landscapes, and exotic world fusion. The perfectly calibrated juxtaposition in "Screen Gem," which marries pulsing tribal percussion to a Kraftwerk-like synth pattern, reveals the sophistication of Vedvik's approach. "Sargasso" is evocative and sensual, while "At the Oasis" is nearly jazzy in its accents.

The addition of tabla to Vedvik's instrumentation helps introduce the flavor of South Asia to the mix, culminating in the album's final cut, "Kirtan," complete with sinuous vocal chants. Yet these elements are blended seamlessly on tracks bearing the hallmarks of Western music, as on the swinging, space-age jazz of "Trance Detectives." Overall, Vedvik has made an excellent album of New Age electronica that stands up among its kindred in the contemporary electronica genre, as well as pushing all the right buttons for New Age devotees.
