Adhesive gone bad?

This tape is exactly what I was looking for in every way except that the adhesive pulls from the backing leaving terrible residue when removed. Similar tapes also using rubber adhesive don't. It seems likely this tape was subjected to improper temperature (maybe in shipping?) or is simply expired stock.
